Squid Wing Cut | Frozen Squid Wing (Fin) Cuts | IQF/BQF — Easyseafood

Squid Wing Cut

Squid Wing Cut is a frozen seafood cut consisting of the wing (fin) — the triangular fin portion at the junction of the squid's head and body — separated along the muscle joint and frozen. It is a natural by-product of tube/ring processing, prized as a tender, flavorful value cut. Supplied skin-on or skin-off, IQF (free-flowing) or block-frozen (BQF) with a protective glaze.

A versatile ingredient for Asian kitchens and the dried-snack industry, squid wing is used in stir-fries, squid salads, soups, instant-noodle seasoning, and as the base for seasoned dried squid-wing snacks.

What Is a Squid Wing Cut?

The "wing" is the fin flap running along the rear edge of the squid mantle. During processing, the whole squid is headed and the tube is separated; the wing is then cut free along the natural muscle seam, preserving the intact fin meat. The result is a distinct, mildly sweet, tender cut — 100% squid (a cephalopod mollusc), no other species blended in.

Key Features

  • True squid wing — the triangular fin portion, not body meat or tentacle
  • Multi-species supply — giant squid (Dosidicus gigas), Illex argentinus, Loligo / Uroteuthis, Todarodes pacificus, Ommastrephes bartrami per availability
  • Skin-on or skin-off — skin-on for a meatier bite, skin-off for a cleaner cut
  • Flexible freeze — IQF (free-flowing) or BQF glazed blocks
  • Value cut — typically ~10–12% of whole-round squid by weight; cost-effective for processing
  • Long shelf life — 24 months frozen (unopened, −18 °C or below)

Applications

  • Asian stir-fries and braised squid dishes
  • Squid salad, squid soup, and hot-pot ingredients
  • Instant-noodle / seasoning base (processed form)
  • Base for dried and seasoned squid-wing snacks (Russia, Ukraine, Japan, Korea, EU, SE Asia)

Certifications & Packaging

  • Certifications: HACCP, BRC, HALAL, ISO 22000; FDA registration available on request
  • Packaging: 10 kg carton; 15/20 kg block or woven bag; 1 kg retail bag / 10 kg bulk. Poly-lined, reefer-export ready
  • Allergen note: Mollusc (cephalopod squid) only for the plain frozen wing. Dried/seasoned finished snacks declare additional allergens (e.g., Soy, Wheat/Gluten) per recipe.

Storage & Thawing

  • Store at −18 °C or below.
  • Thaw under refrigeration or in cold water; drain before cooking.
  • Avoid repeated thawing to preserve texture.

FAQ

A. Procurement / Trade

A1. What is the MOQ and lead time? MOQ is typically 1 × 20'FCL (~11–14 MT) or 1 × 40'FCL (~24–28 MT). Lead time ~15–21 days after order confirmation, subject to raw-material availability and species/size mix.

A2. Can you customize size, skin, and glaze? Yes. Size grade, skin-on vs skin-off, and glaze % (0 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 30%, or 100% net weight) are all customizable to spec.

A3. What incoterms and payment terms do you offer? Common incoterms are FOB / CFR / CIF. Payment is typically T/T (30% deposit, 70% against B/L copy) or confirmed L/C at sight for new accounts.

B. Documents / Compliance

B1. What documents accompany each shipment? Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, Health Certificate, Certificate of Analysis (COA), HALAL (if applicable), Certificate of Origin, and catch/processing documentation. EU-bound cargo requires an EU catch certificate where applicable.

B2. Is HALAL certification available? Yes — HALAL is available from a recognized certifying body, matched to the destination market. Confirm at order time.

B3. How do you handle traceability and IUU compliance? We provide lot/trace codes, vessel/landing data, and sanitary certification, with pre-shipment document reconciliation (lot weights, container IDs). Wild-catch sourcing follows IUU-screening expectations for the relevant fishery (e.g., Southwest Atlantic for Illex, Southeast Pacific for Dosidicus gigas).

C. Specs / Logistics

C1. What species and sizes are supplied? Species follows supply: Dosidicus gigas (FAO 87), Illex argentinus (FAO 41), Loligo / Uroteuthis, Todarodes pacificus, Ommastrephes bartrami. Common size grades: 50–100 g, 100–200 g, 200 g+; giant-squid wing also runs 300–500 / 500–1000 / 1000–2000 g. Width can be specified (e.g., 0.8–1.2 cm).

C2. What glaze and net weight apply? Glaze options: 0% (net), 10%, 15%, 20%, 30%, or 100% net weight. Net weight is declared per pack; glaze % is printed on the label.

C3. What packaging and shelf life apply? 10 kg carton; 15/20 kg block or woven bag; 1 kg retail bag / 10 kg bulk. Shelf life is 24 months at −18 °C (unopened). HS code: 0307.43.

D. Technical Clarification

D1. What exactly is the "wing" — is it the whole squid? No. The wing is the triangular fin at the head–body junction, cut free along the muscle seam. It is a distinct cut, not the whole squid, tube, or tentacle.

D2. What allergen must be declared? Only Mollusc (cephalopod squid) for the plain frozen wing. If the wing is further processed into dried/seasoned snacks, additional allergens (Soy, Wheat/Gluten, etc.) are declared separately per the finished-product recipe.

D3. Which species should I choose, and why? Giant squid (Dosidicus gigas, FAO 87) wing is typically the most cost-effective and sells well in Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan; Illex / Todarodes wings command a premium on texture. Selection depends on target market and price point — we advise per destination.
