Half Shell Mussel (Thick-Shelled) | Frozen Mytilus coruscus on Half Shell

Half Shell Mussel refers to edible mussel meat presented on a single valve (one shell removed), individually quick-frozen (IQF) or block frozen, raw or blanched, and ready to cook. This product uses the thick-shelled mussel Mytilus coruscus — a large, robust-shelled bivalve native to the temperate coasts of China, Korea and Japan, prized for firmer, chewier meat than the common blue mussel (M. edulis).

What It Is

  • Species: Mytilus coruscus (贻贝科 Mytilidae, Bivalvia) — thick-shelled mussel, also known as 淡菜 / 海红. Native to the Yellow, Bohai and East China Seas; widely raft- and rope-cultured in Zhejiang and along the Zhoushan archipelago.
  • Form: one valve removed, meat attached to the half shell. This SKU is raw frozen (blanched/cooked on request).
  • Size grades: shell length 6–8 / 8–10 / 10–12 / 12–14 cm; or 20–30 / 30–40 / 40–60 pcs per kg.
  • Processing: pre-cleaned (debearded, washed), metal-detected, no additives; IQF free-flowing (default) or BQF block; glaze 0–20%; 10 kg carton; −18 °C, 24 months (raw) / 12–18 months (cooked).

Key Features

  • Authentic half-shell presentation — the retained valve is a natural plating base that holds juices and sauce; eliminates debearding, scrubbing and pre-steaming, cutting kitchen prep time.
  • Firm, chewy, sweet-briny meat from M. coruscus — a competitive alternative to New Zealand green-lipped mussel at a better price point (the same substitution logic driving Zhoushan blue mussel uptake in Thailand/Taiwan).
  • IQF free-flowing for precise portion control; cook directly from frozen or after refrigeration thaw.
  • Farm-raised (rope/raft culture) — a low-carbon, sustainable filter-feeder; ASC / BAP / GLOBALG.A.P available.
  • Consistent, traceable supply — batch-coded lots linked to farm and processing records.

Applications

  • Bake / broil: garlic butter, breadcrumbs, cheese — the classic 蒜蓉烤青口.
  • Steam: white wine, garlic, herbs for a bistro-style appetizer.
  • Stir-fry: black bean, chili, or lemongrass sauces (Asian wok).
  • Paella, pasta, seafood platters, chowder, and meal kits.

Certifications

  • Baseline: HACCP, BRC, HALAL, ISO 22000, FDA, EU Reg. 853.
  • Eco-cert by farming method: Mytilus coruscus is farm-raised, so ASC / BAP / GLOBALG.A.P are legitimately applicable; MSC applies only to genuinely wild-harvested mussel (rare) and is generally NOT applicable. (Note: some suppliers mislabel farmed mussels with MSC — we match the eco-label to the actual culture method.)

Storage

Keep at −18 °C or below. Shelf life 24 months for raw frozen; 12–18 months if pre-cooked/blanched.

FAQ

Q1. What is the MOQ, and can I mix with other products?
A: Standard MOQ is one 20' reefer (~10–14 MT) or 40' reefer (~24–28 MT); mixed loading with other frozen seafood is available subject to compatible temperature and carton size.

Q2. What is the lead time and which Incoterms do you offer?
A: About 7–25 days after deposit. We trade FOB, CIF, CFR from Fuzhou / Xiamen / Qingdao, China.

Q3. What payment terms do you accept?
A: T/T (30% deposit, 70% against B/L copy) and L/C at sight for qualified buyers.

Q4. What export documents do you provide?
A: Health Certificate, Certificate of Origin, Aquaculture / Farming Declaration, COA, Heavy Metal & Microbiology Analysis, Packing List, Commercial Invoice, Bill of Lading, plus HALAL and EU establishment number where required.

Q5. Which certifications apply to this product?
A: HACCP and HALAL standard; BRC, ISO 22000, FDA, EU on request. Because Mytilus coruscus is farm-raised, ASC / BAP / GLOBALG.A.P are legitimately available; MSC is generally not applicable (it is a farmed, not wild, product).

D1. What species is this — is it the same as blue mussel or green mussel?
A: This product is the thick-shelled mussel Mytilus coruscus (贻贝科). It differs from the blue mussel M. edulis, the Mediterranean mussel M. galloprovincialis, and the green/Asian mussels Perna viridis / P. canaliculus. Half-shell mussels on the market are frequently blended across these species, so we state the Latin name on the invoice to prevent substitution.

D2. Wild vs farmed — which eco-cert is correct?
A: M. coruscus is farm-raised (rope/raft culture), so the correct eco-labels are ASC / BAP / GLOBALG.A.P. MSC is for wild capture and is generally not applicable to farmed mussels. We deliberately avoid the common supplier error of stamping MSC onto farmed stock.

D3. What HS code applies to frozen half-shell mussel?
A: Internationally, frozen mussels (whether on half shell, whole, or as meat) are HS 0307.32 (Mussels, Mytilus / Perna spp., frozen). Under China Customs practice the 8-digit line is 0307.39.0001 (Mussels, frozen). If the product is pre-cooked and seasoned (e.g. garlic-butter half-shell prepared goods), it crosses into HS 1605.21 (prepared/preserved mussels). It does not fall under 0307.71 (that is the live/fresh oyster code — a frequent misclassification by inexperienced suppliers), nor under fish fillet 0304, shrimp 0306, or scallop 0307.29.

D4. Raw frozen vs pre-cooked, and IQF vs BQF — how do I choose?
A: This SKU is raw frozen on half shell (blanched on request) — ideal for buyers who finish in-kitchen. IQF gives free-flowing, portion-friendly pieces for retail and foodservice; BQF block lowers unit cost for repacking/processing. Pre-cooked half-shell shifts the HS to 1605 and shortens shelf life to 12–18 months.
