Equatorial Squid Strips in this product refers to strips cut from wild equatorial squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis (purpleback flying squid; trade name "equatorial squid"), where the mantle (body tube) is peeled skinless while the ears (wings / fins) are left skin-on, both cut into strips and mixed together. It is a species + processing identity, not a standard all-skinless strip. The same species supplies our black-squid head-with-tentacle line under a different trade name and cut — fixing the Latin name S. oualaniensis prevents substitution with Todarodes, Illex, Dosidicus or Loligo.

What It Is

Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis is a wild, pelagic ommastrephid squid of the equatorial Indo-Pacific — including the South China Sea — one of the most abundant large squids, and China's most important economic cephalopod resource in southern waters. For this product the cleaned mantle is peeled (skinless) to a clean white face, while the ears (wings / fins) keep their skin (skin-on, reddish-brown); both are cross-cut into strips and mixed. The result is a mixed pack of white skinless mantle strips and darker skin-on ear strips — a cost-efficient, rustic cut that saves the labour of peeling the ears while giving a two-tone, natural appearance. Supplied raw-frozen, IQF (free-flowing) or block, with an optional protective glaze.

A. The mantle (body tube) is peeled skinless — a clean white face; the ears (wings / fins) keep their skin — reddish-brown, skin-on. Both are cut into strips and mixed together in the pack. The result is a two-tone mixed cut (white skinless mantle strips + darker skin-on ear strips). This saves the labour of peeling the ears and gives a rustic, natural look with colour contrast — distinct from all-skinless strips (white only) or pure wing strips.

Q3. Is this wild-caught or farmed, and which certification applies?
A. Wild-caught. Equatorial squid is captured from the wild (South China Sea / equatorial Indo-Pacific); it is not farmed. The correct scheme is MSC (where the fishery is certified). ASC / BAP / GLOBALG.A.P. do not apply — those are aquaculture standards and squid is wild.

Q4. What HS code applies to frozen equatorial squid strips?
A. HS 0307.43 — frozen squid, cut or whole (the strips are a raw frozen cut, same code). Do not use 0307.42 (live/fresh/chilled) or Chapter 3 fish codes. If the strips are breaded, battered or pre-cooked, the code shifts to 1605.54 (prepared squid). Declare by the actual processing state.

A. IQF keeps each strip separate for accurate portioning in foodservice and retail; block frozen is a solid slab, better value for further processing. Strip width/length and glaze % (0–20%) are adjustable to buyer spec; confirm at order.
