Breaded Butterfly Shrimp | Vannamei | IQF — Easyseafood
readed Butterfly Shrimp is a value-added, ready-to-cook product made from vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) — the headless, peeled and deveined tail meat is sliced open along the back (butterflied) to expose the tail fan, then coated with a pre-dust, batter and breadcrumb layer and individually quick-frozen. The defining trait versus a plain peeled shrimp is the butterfly cut with the tail left on and the breading coating
What It Is
- Species: Litopenaeus vannamei (vannamei / whiteleg shrimp); Penaeus monodon (black tiger) available on request
- Part / Form: Headless, peeled, deveined, butterflied, tail-on, breaded (pre-dust + batter + breadcrumbs)
- Origin: Farm-raised (ponds / RAS); Southwest Asia & Latin America supply
- Sensory: Sweet, firm white meat inside a crisp golden coating; neutral flavor that takes up seasoning and sauce
Key Features
- Value-added, ready-to-fry — no peeling or butterflying needed at the kitchen
- Butterfly cut with tail fan on for an attractive plate presentation
- IQF-individually quick-frozen, portion-separated, no clumping
- Coating typically 45–55% of finished weight (breadcrumb / panko / coconut-flake variants available)
- Farmed under ASC / BAP / GLOBALG.A.P. schemes — full traceability to pond
- Frozen at -18°C; 24-month shelf life; bulk or retail tray pack
Applications
- Quick-service restaurants, casual dining and hotel banquets (fried appetizer)
- Retail frozen aisle (air-fryer / oven-ready bags and trays)
- Convenience meals, bento and lunch-box components
- Asian street-food and Western "popcorn shrimp" style snacks
Certifications & Packaging
- Food safety: HACCP, BRC, ISO 22000, HALAL, FDA, EU Reg. 853
- Sustainability (source-matched): Farmed → ASC / BAP / GLOBALG.A.P. applicable; MSC not applicable (wild-capture label, not for farmed shrimp)

FAQ
Q1. Is this wild or farmed shrimp, and which certification applies? A. It is farm-raised vannamei (or black tiger on request) — not wild. Therefore ASC, BAP or GLOBALG.A.P. apply, while MSC does not (MSC is a wild-fisheries label). Always lock the Latin name (Litopenaeus vannamei) and the certification in the order to avoid substitution with a different farmed or wild species.
Q2. Why is the HS code 1605.21 and not 0306.17? A. Breading is a "preparation," so the product leaves raw Chapter 3 and enters Chapter 16. HS 1605.21 = "shrimps and prawns, prepared or preserved, not in airtight containers." 0306.17 is for raw frozen shrimp only; 1605.29 is the airtight-container (canned) version. Misdeclaring breaded shrimp as 0306.17 is a common and costly customs error.
Q3. What does "butterfly" mean and how is it different from plain PDTO? A. "Butterfly" (凤尾) means the peeled, deveined tail is cut open along the back and spread flat, with the tail fan left attached. This distinguishes it from ordinary peeled-deveined-tail-on (PDTO) shrimp, which are left whole. The butterfly shape crisps evenly and presents attractively, which is why it commands a value-added premium.
Q4. How much shrimp is actually in the pack (coating ratio)? A. For frozen raw breaded shrimp, finished product is typically 50–55% shrimp by weight, the remainder being coating (per US CBP ruling N330025). Confirm the exact shrimp:coating ratio in the spec — it directly drives yield and price per edible portion.
Q5. Raw breaded vs pre-fried — what is the difference? A. Raw breaded is coated but uncooked (fry/air-fry from frozen). Pre-fried (par-fried) is flash-fried before freezing (reheat only). Both fall under 1605.21; confirm which your buyers need, as pre-fried carries a slightly different texture and handling note.
Q6. What HS code applies and what paperwork is needed? A. HS 1605.21 (China CN 16052100 — the national tariff explicitly lists "冻裹油生凤尾虾 / frozen breaded butterfly shrimp"; US HTS 1605.21.1020 "Frozen, breaded"). Declare the preparation method (breaded / fried), packing (not airtight), and net weight. Not 0306.17 (raw) and not 1605.29 (airtight).
