Vietnam's tilapia fillet exports to the US surge 499% in 2025

As reported by SeafoodMedia on February 11, 2026, Vietnam's tilapia exports to the United States saw a substantial surge in 2025, with the export value hitting 53.15 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 173%. This figure accounted for 54% of Vietnam's total tilapia export value, making the US its largest single export market for tilapia.

In terms of the export product structure, the growth was mainly driven by tilapia fillets. In 2025, the value of Vietnam's tilapia fillet exports to the US reached 40 million US dollars, a staggering year-on-year jump of 499%, which became the core source of income from tilapia exports to the US. Exports of frozen whole tilapia exceeded 13 million US dollars, registering a modest year-on-year rise of merely 4%. In contrast, the export values of processed tilapia products (HS Code Chapter 16) and dried tilapia products (HS 0305) to the US dropped by 39% and 68% respectively, presenting a distinct divergent trend in product exports.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) put forward requirements for the development of the industry, stating that for Vietnam's tilapia industry to achieve sustainable development, it is necessary to continuously improve product quality, strictly comply with international certification standards, and meet the relevant requirements for sustainability and traceability. Meanwhile, it is crucial to increase investment in breeding programs, advanced aquaculture technologies and the deep processing sector.
