As reported by SeafoodMedia on February 11, 2026, the Peruvian handline fishing fishery for Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) has been officially incorporated into the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) Improvement Project (MSC IP), a globally authoritative and rigorous certification system for fisheries sustainability.
The Peruvian squid fishing industry is the most important handline fishery in Peru, with an annual catch of 500,000 metric tons. It is not only the core of the local handline fishing sector but also a strategic pillar industry of Peru's national economy. Its inclusion in the MSC IP marks a significant step for the fishery in moving towards international sustainable fisheries standards.
