Message from SeafoodMedia: Based on the findings obtained by Peru’s Institute of the Sea (IMAR) during the Fifth Special Survey on Jumbo Flying Squid, Peru’s Ministry of Production has ordered the resumption of fishing for jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas).

Jumbo flying squid fishing represents one of the country’s traditional artisanal fisheries.

This measure forms part of the government‑led recovery plan for the fishing and aquaculture industries, designed to revitalize production and safeguard the livelihoods of thousands of households dependent on the sector.

Under Ministerial Decree No. 00304‑2026‑PRODUCE, the total allowable catch (TAC) for 2026 has been raised to 709,659 tonnes. Of this volume, 82,321 tonnes will be open for harvest from 30 August to 31 December. Quotas will be allocated in two phases according to vessel hold capacity, with per‑trip catch limits imposed to prevent excessive concentration of fishing effort.
