Recently, the Portuguese government has introduced a series of new regulations to strengthen restrictions on octopus fishing, covering phased fishing ban periods, stricter fishing gear requirements, and clarification of fishermen's administrative responsibilities, aiming to balance resource protection and the sustainable development of fisheries.
The fishing ban is implemented in a phased manner by region and time, which not only leaves time for octopuses to reproduce and grow, helping their population recover, but also takes into account the fishery economy and market demand during the peak summer tourist season. The specific arrangements are as follows:
Northernmost coastline: Fishing ban from July 17 to August 15
Central waters: Fishing ban from August 16 to September 14
Southern waters: Fishing ban from September 15 to October 14
The introduction of these new regulations reflects Portugal's emphasis on marine ecological protection and is an important measure to promote the sustainable development of fisheries, which is expected to lay the foundation for the sustainable use of octopus resources.
