Argentina's Federal Fisheries Council (CFP) has approved an early start to the 2026 Argentine shortfin squid fishing season, with a phased operational plan officially announced.
šÆ Fishing Schedule
January 2, 00:00: Areas between 49°-52°S open first
January 7, 00:00: Vessels completing 3 days of operations may enter areas south of 44°
January 12, 00:00: All vessels fully open to areas south of 44°
Scientific Basis & Resource Assessment
Technical reports from the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) indicate that the summer spawning population (SDV) squid typically complete reproduction by mid-January, reaching the end of their life cycle. These resources are mainly distributed in areas between 44°-48°S, west of 62°W, with the fishing season extending until mid-February. Notably, the South Patagonian stock (SSP) in this region is scarce, and early fishing will not affect the overall resource structure.
Economic Benefits
International market demand for Argentine squid continues to grow, with industry advocates pushing for an early start to maximize 2026 economic benefits. Data shows catch volumes increased significantly in the previous fishing season, providing strong support for this season's early launch. Professional technical forecasts suggest the 2026 season catch volume is expected to replicate the good levels seen in 2025.
