According to data from the New Bedford Seafood Auction Market (Base) in Massachusetts, the average price of large-sized Atlantic frozen scallops in the United States climbed significantly during the 2024-2025 fishing season.
In Week 20, the average price for the U-10 size reached $24.51 per pound, a 40% increase from the first week of the season and a 56% increase from the same period last year.
The U-12 specification also showed a price increase, with a 50% increase over the same period last year.
The main reason for this round of price increases is that the supply of large-sized scallops has significantly reduced. Among the scallops processed in the base market, the proportion of large-sized scallops has dropped significantly. Although overall catches are expected to be up 10% from last year, actual catches have fallen by 14% so far.
At the same time, the price of small and medium-sized scallops has shown a fluctuating trend. Although the price of the U-20 specification has increased compared with last year, it has declined recently; while the price of the U-30 specification has continued to fall since the beginning of the fishing season, but it is still higher than the same period last year.
Industry experts predict that these prices may also start to rise as buyers gradually shift to small and medium-sized scallops. As the Bering Sea fishing season resumes, the market may be in for a new change.
Overall, the U.S. Atlantic frozen scallop market is currently experiencing price surges for large sizes and price fluctuations for small and medium sizes.
